Wedding DJ cover work: how to be the DJ other DJs call
How wedding DJs pick up cover dates when another DJ is double-booked, sick or stuck: what to offer, what to charge, and how to be found.

Every wedding DJ has had the week where two couples picked the same Saturday, or the day an illness landed on a Friday night. Those dates need someone, and the person they call is rarely a stranger from a search result.
TL;DR: DJ cover work goes to DJs who are known to be reliable, who publish their area and equipment, and who can say yes quickly. Make yourself easy to call: say what you run, where you will travel, what you charge for cover, and keep your open dates current.
What is DJ cover work?
It is taking a date another DJ cannot play: a double booking, an illness, a clash with a corporate gig, or an event larger than one person can run. Sometimes it is a one-off. Sometimes it grows into a standing arrangement where two DJs cover each other's overflow.
What do the studios and DJs who need cover look for?
- Gear that matches the date. Sound for a ballroom is not sound for a barn. Say what you carry.
- Style. Open-format, a specific genre, bilingual MC work, a quiet cocktail hour. Say what you do well.
- Reach. The towns you cover without a travel fee.
- Speed. A cover request usually has days, not weeks. Quick, clear replies win these dates.
- Reputation. A name someone vouches for.
What should you charge for cover?
Cover is not a discount. You are taking a date at short notice, often with a client you did not choose and a planning file you did not write. Many DJs charge their normal rate plus a short-notice premium, and some charge a fee for the planning handover. Whatever you decide, put it on your profile so nobody has to ask.
How does the handover work?
The best cover dates come with a good handover: the timeline, the must-play and do-not-play lists, the announcements and the contact on the day. If you are the DJ who needs cover, write that down once and attach it. If you are the DJ covering, ask for it before you say yes. Our music planning meeting guide lists what belongs in it.
How do you get found?
Be on the places where DJs who need cover actually look. The Booksui Network lets you put your roles, your area, your rates and your open dates on one profile. Studios and planners sending a Crew Call that matches see you. Booksui takes no cut of what you agree, and nothing happens unless you say yes.
